Do Melbourne Businesses Need a Melbourne-Based Web Design Agency?

Most Melbourne businesses don't need a Melbourne-based web design agency. Website projects are planned, designed and reviewed on video calls, shared boards and preview links, so an agency's skills, process and communication matter more than its postcode. A local agency is worth it when you need on-site photography or video, or regular face-to-face workshops.

Do Melbourne Businesses Need a Melbourne-Based Web Design Agency?

Do you need a web design agency based in Melbourne?

For most businesses, no. A website project is mostly planning, writing, designing, building and reviewing, and almost all of that happens on screens. Whether your designer is in Fitzroy or Cronulla, you will see your site through a link, give feedback in a shared board or document, and meet on video calls. What decides how the project goes is the agency's process and communication, not its address.

There are exceptions, and they matter. This guide covers both sides so you can decide for your business. For context, we're Leed Agency, a website design and Google Ads studio in Cronulla, in Sydney's Sutherland Shire, so we're an interstate option for Melbourne businesses. We've tried to keep this balanced.

Is it better to hire a local agency or an interstate one?

Neither is better by default. Compare them on the same footing:

  • Face-to-face meetings – Melbourne-based agency: Easy to meet in person; Interstate agency: Video calls, with visits only if agreed
  • On-site photography and video – Melbourne-based agency: Can be organised and directed locally; Interstate agency: Usually a Melbourne photographer, briefed by the agency
  • Working hours – Melbourne-based agency: Same as yours; Interstate agency: Sydney, Canberra and Hobart match Melbourne all year; Brisbane is one hour behind during daylight saving; Perth is two to three hours behind
  • Local market knowledge – Melbourne-based agency: May already know your suburbs and competitors; Interstate agency: Learns through discovery and research, and brings comparisons from other markets
  • Range of choice – Melbourne-based agency: Limited to one city; Interstate agency: The whole country
  • Consumer protection – Melbourne-based agency: Australian Consumer Law applies; Interstate agency: Australian Consumer Law applies to an Australian business in any state
  • Local SEO – Melbourne-based agency: No advantage from the agency's location; Interstate agency: No disadvantage from the agency's location

How does a remote web design project actually work?

  1. Discovery call. A video call about your business, customers, competitors and goals. Have your analytics and a few sites you like ready.
  2. Planning. The agency maps the pages, the main calls to action and the content needed, usually on a shared board you can comment on.
  3. Content gathering. You upload logos, photos, product data and copy to a shared folder. If the agency writes the copy, it interviews you on a call.
  4. Design. You get a link to review the design on desktop and phone, and leave comments directly on it.
  5. Development. The site is built on a staging link so you can click through the real thing before it goes live.
  6. Launch. The domain is connected, redirects from old pages are set up, and forms and tracking are tested.
  7. Training and support. A walk-through, ideally recorded, so your team can edit the site, followed by ongoing support.

None of these steps needs anyone in the same room. Plenty of local agencies run projects exactly this way too, even when the client is a 20-minute drive away.

When does a local Melbourne agency genuinely matter?

  • On-site photography or video. A cafe on Smith Street, a store on Chapel Street or a clinic in Camberwell looks best with real photos of the space and the team. A local agency can run the shoot.
  • Workshops with several decision makers. If a board or a large team must sign off, an in-person workshop can save rounds of email.
  • A physical brand rollout. If the website is part of a rebrand that includes signage, vehicles or a fit-out, a local agency can check things in person.
  • Personal preference. Some owners want to sit across the table from the people they're paying. That's a fair reason.

Photography is the easiest of these to solve. An interstate agency can write a shot list and brief, and you book a Melbourne photographer directly. You get local photos and keep your choice of agency.

Will an interstate agency hurt my local SEO in Melbourne?

No. Google ranks a local business on signals about that business, not about the agency that built its site. Those signals include your Google Business Profile, your address and service areas, your reviews, and pages that clearly describe what you do in the suburbs you serve, such as a page for plumbing in Footscray or physio in Box Hill. A good agency in any city can set these up. What matters is that it asks about your service areas and builds pages for them.

What should you check before hiring an agency in another state?

  • Is the team based in Australia, and will you speak to the people building your site?
  • How quickly does it reply, and through which channel: email, phone or a shared board?
  • How is feedback collected? Comments on the design are easier to manage than long email threads.
  • Does it have live work for clients outside its own city?
  • Will your domain, website and accounts be in your name?
  • What does support look like after launch, and is there a lock-in contract?

Where Leed Agency fits

Leed Agency is based in Cronulla, in Sydney's Sutherland Shire. We don't have a Melbourne office or Melbourne clients to point you to, and we'd rather say so than imply otherwise. What we do have is a track record of working remotely with businesses well outside Sydney:

  • Rural Inputs WA: a product-led site for a Western Australian agricultural supplier
  • Spicy Dugong: an ecommerce store for a Byron Bay apparel label
  • Coast Getaways: holiday accommodation on the NSW Central Coast, with search and booking
  • Grant Co.: a custom accommodation website with integrated booking in the Shoalhaven
  • Vanworks: trade van fitouts across Sydney and Wollongong

You deal directly with Bailey, who leads design and web, and with me on Google Ads and performance. Every project follows the same three stages: Planning, Design & Development, then Launch & Growth with ongoing support. We've completed 97+ projects for 86+ clients and hold a 5.0 rating on Google Reviews.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Melbourne-based web designer?

Not for most projects. Website projects run on video calls, shared boards and preview links, so an agency's process and communication matter more than its location.

When is a local web design agency worth it?

When you need on-site photography or video, in-person workshops with several decision makers, or a physical rebrand such as signage alongside the website.

Does using an interstate agency affect local SEO?

No. Local rankings depend on your Google Business Profile, address, service areas, reviews and suburb-specific content, not on where your agency is based.

Is there a time difference between Melbourne and Sydney?

No. Melbourne and Sydney use the same time zone and both observe daylight saving, so business hours line up all year.

Can Leed Agency build a website for a Melbourne business?

Yes, remotely. Leed Agency is based in Cronulla, Sydney, has no Melbourne office, and works with businesses Australia-wide over video calls and shared project boards.
