Template vs Custom Website: Which Suits an Australian Small Business?

Most Australian small businesses are well served by a professionally customised premium template: it usually launches faster, costs less, and can still be matched closely to your brand. Choose a fully custom website when your brand, your functionality (such as integrated bookings) or a crowded market needs something a template can't do well, or when the site is a core sales tool you will invest in for years.

Template vs Custom Website: Which Suits an Australian Small Business?

What is the difference between a template and a custom website?

A template website starts from a pre-designed layout. The structure, page types and core design already exist, and a designer adapts them with your logo, colours, fonts, photos and copy. A custom website is designed from a blank page around your brand, your customers and the specific things your site needs to do.

Both can be built on the same platforms. At Leed Agency we build on Webflow and Shopify, and either approach works on either platform. A professionally set up template is also very different from a DIY site builder: you still get proper structure, mobile layouts, forms, tracking and someone who knows how to put it all together.

How do template and custom websites compare?

  • Starting point – Premium template: Proven layout adapted to your brand; Fully custom: Designed from scratch for your business
  • Brand fit – Premium template: Good, with colours, fonts, imagery and copy customised; Fully custom: Exact, with every section designed around your brand
  • Time to launch – Premium template: Usually faster, as the structure already exists; Fully custom: Longer, with more design rounds
  • Budget – Premium template: Lower; Fully custom: Higher
  • Unique features – Premium template: Limited to what the template and platform support well; Fully custom: Built to suit, such as integrated booking or custom product layouts
  • Best for – Premium template: New businesses, standard service sites, tighter budgets; Fully custom: Established brands, crowded markets, unusual functionality
  • Changing it later – Premium template: Easy to edit; big structural changes can hit template limits; Fully custom: Easy to edit and designed to grow

How much does each option cost in Australia?

In our experience, a professionally set up template website for an Australian small business typically costs around $2,500 to $7,000, while a fully custom website typically ranges from about $8,000 to $25,000, with larger sites and ecommerce stores going higher. Prices vary with page count, copywriting, photography and integrations.

Remember the running costs too: platform plans for Webflow or Shopify, any paid apps, your domain and ongoing support. Leed Agency doesn't publish fixed packages. We quote every project after a free consultation, because two "five-page websites" can be completely different jobs.

When is a template the right choice?

A premium template is often the smarter option when:

  • You are a new business and need a credible site live quickly.
  • Your site follows a familiar structure, such as services, about, reviews and contact.
  • Your budget is better spent on Google Ads, photography or copywriting.
  • You want to test a market before investing in a bigger build.
  • You are replacing an outdated site and the main goal is to look professional and get enquiries.

The quality of the template matters. A well-built premium template loads fast, has clean structure and is designed around a clear next step for visitors. A cheap theme packed with sliders and animations can be slow and hard to edit. That is why we work from a library of 100+ premium templates.

When should you go fully custom?

  • You need functionality a template can't handle well. Grant Co., an accommodation business in the Shoalhaven, needed a custom website with booking integrated into the site.
  • Your brand is the product. Brand-led businesses, like Little Seeds Early Learning with a site built around families, need the design to communicate feeling as much as information.
  • Your website is part of your portfolio. For a design business such as URHAUS, a Sydney building design studio, how the site looks says something about the work itself.
  • You are in a crowded market. If every competitor uses similar layouts, a distinctive site helps you stand out.
  • The site is a long-term sales tool. If you plan to invest in the website for years, a custom foundation can be easier to grow.

Will a template website hurt my SEO or Google Ads results?

Not by itself. Search engines and ad platforms care about page speed, mobile usability, clear headings, relevant content and a good landing page experience. A well-built template can do all of that. What hurts results is weak structure: one page trying to cover every service, oversized images, no clear call to action and no tracking.

Whichever route you choose, make sure each main service has its own page, your contact details are consistent and every form and call is tracked. That matters more for Google Ads performance than whether the layout started as a template.

Can you start with a template and move to custom later?

Yes, and plenty of businesses do. A premium template gets you online and generating enquiries, then you can redesign key pages, add custom sections or move to a full custom build as the business grows. On Webflow and Shopify that can happen in stages rather than as one big rebuild.

What should you ask a designer before choosing?

A few questions will usually make the right option obvious:

  • Which of my goals can a template meet, and which would need custom work?
  • Can you show me live sites built from templates and fully custom sites, so I can compare?
  • What can I edit myself after launch, and what will need your help?
  • If I start with a template, how would we move to custom later?
  • Who owns the site, the domain and the platform account?

A good designer will answer these plainly and won't push you towards the more expensive option if a template does the job.

Frequently asked questions

Is a template website unprofessional?

No. A premium template set up properly by a designer, with your branding, photos and copy, looks professional and performs well. Most visitors never know a site started from a template.

Is a custom website worth it for a small business?

It is worth it when you need features a template can't handle, when your brand is central to sales, or when the site is a long-term investment in a crowded market. Otherwise a premium template is often better value.

Can I edit a template website myself?

Yes. Sites built on Webflow and Shopify can be edited by the business owner for everyday changes like text, images and products, with larger changes handled by your agency.

Do template websites rank on Google?

They can. Rankings depend on content, structure, speed and local signals such as reviews, not on whether the design started from a template.

Does Leed Agency offer both templates and custom websites?

Yes. Leed Agency in Cronulla offers a library of 100+ premium templates as well as fully custom builds, and quotes each project after a free consultation.
