Webflow vs Shopify for Sydney Businesses: Which Should You Build On?

If your business mainly sells products online, build on Shopify. If your website's job is to win calls, quote requests or bookings and you want full design control and an easy-to-edit CMS, build on Webflow. Leed Agency in Cronulla builds on both and chooses the platform per client.

Webflow vs Shopify for Sydney Businesses: Which Should You Build On?

Should a Sydney business build on Webflow or Shopify?

Choose by the main job of the website. Shopify is built for selling: products, inventory, checkout, payments, shipping and order management all live in one admin. Webflow is built for marketing websites: custom layouts, landing pages, a flexible content management system (CMS) and fast, clean pages that turn visitors into enquiries. Both are fully hosted, so there are no servers, plugin updates or security patches for you to manage.

Leed Agency is a small website design and Google Ads studio based in Cronulla, in Sydney's Sutherland Shire. We are a Shopify Partner and we also build on Webflow, so we have no reason to push one over the other. We pick the platform per client after a free consultation, based on what the site needs to do over the next few years.

How do Webflow and Shopify compare side by side?

  • Best suited to – Webflow: Service businesses, lead generation, brand and content sites; Shopify: Online stores selling physical or digital products
  • Design control – Webflow: Very high; layouts are built visually with no theme limits; Shopify: High within a theme; deeper changes need theme code
  • Ecommerce – Webflow: Available, best for small catalogues; Shopify: Core strength: checkout, inventory, shipping, discounts, multi-channel sales
  • CMS and blog – Webflow: Strong, flexible collections for blogs, case studies, locations and team pages; Shopify: Basic blog and pages; content is secondary to products
  • Apps and integrations – Webflow: Smaller ecosystem; integrations via embeds and connector tools; Shopify: Large app store for reviews, subscriptions, bundles and loyalty
  • Editing for owners – Webflow: Visual editor for text, images and CMS items; Shopify: Admin for products and orders, theme editor for page sections
  • Hosting and security – Webflow: Managed by Webflow; Shopify: Managed by Shopify
  • Ongoing costs – Webflow: Monthly site plan; Shopify: Monthly plan, plus payment processing and any paid apps

The short version: if most of your revenue will come through an online checkout, Shopify usually wins. If most of your revenue starts with a phone call, a form or a booking, Webflow usually wins.

When is Webflow the better choice?

Webflow suits businesses whose website exists to generate calls, quote requests and bookings. It gives a designer full control of layout and typography without being boxed in by a theme, and its CMS makes it easy to publish service pages, suburb pages, case studies and blog posts that all follow the same structure.

It tends to be the right fit for:

  • Trades and home services such as electricians, roofers, plumbers and fit-out businesses that need service and area pages with a clear call to action.
  • Health and professional practices such as clinics, therapists and consultants who need a calm, credible site and a simple booking or enquiry path.
  • Design, building and creative studios that need a portfolio to look as good as the work.
  • Businesses running Google Ads that need fast, focused landing pages they can test and change without a developer.

Many of the lead-focused sites in our portfolio follow this pattern. Braytech Electrical's site is built to win residential electrical jobs across the Sutherland Shire and St George. Vanworks takes quote requests for trade van fit-outs across Sydney and Wollongong, and Pinnacle Attics does the same for attic conversions. In each case the website's job is a phone call or a form, not a checkout.

When is Shopify the better choice?

Shopify is the stronger platform when selling online is the core of the business. It handles product variants, stock levels, discount codes, shipping rates, GST settings, abandoned-cart emails and order fulfilment out of the box, and its app store covers reviews, subscriptions, bundles and loyalty programs. Store owners can add products and process orders from their phone.

It tends to be the right fit for:

  • Fashion, apparel and accessories labels.
  • Skincare, beauty and health product brands.
  • Homewares, gifts and specialty retail.
  • Product-led suppliers that want customers to browse a catalogue and buy or enquire.

Our ecommerce work includes Spicy Dugong, an online store for a Byron Bay apparel label, plus Skin Street Clinic and RatKat, where the ecommerce website and Google Ads were planned and run as one system.

Can you sell on Webflow, or run a content-heavy site on Shopify?

Yes, with limits. Webflow has built-in ecommerce that works for a small catalogue, but it has fewer apps and payment options than Shopify, so a growing store usually outgrows it. Shopify has a blog and standard pages, but its content tools are simpler and its URL structure is fixed (products sit under /products/ and categories under /collections/). If you need both a large store and a lot of content, Shopify with well-planned content pages is usually the practical answer.

What questions should you answer before choosing a platform?

  1. What is the main conversion? A purchase points to Shopify. A call, quote request or booking points to Webflow.
  2. How many products will you sell? A handful can live on either platform. Dozens or hundreds with variants belong on Shopify.
  3. Who will update the site? Both have owner-friendly editors, so think about what you'll change most: products and orders, or pages and posts.
  4. Do you need bookings or integrations? List every system the site must connect to (booking software, CRM, email marketing, accounting) and check support before you choose.
  5. Will you run Google Ads? Plan landing pages from the start so ads send people to pages that match what they searched for.
  6. What are the ongoing costs? Budget for the monthly plan, payment processing on Shopify, and any paid apps or integrations.

Does the platform affect SEO and Google Ads results?

Less than most people think. Both platforms let you set page titles, meta descriptions, image alt text and redirects, and both generate a sitemap. Webflow gives more control over URL structure and page markup; Shopify's fixed structure is perfectly workable for stores. What moves results is the same on either platform: fast pages, clear content that answers the searcher's question, a strong call to action and accurate conversion tracking.

For Google Ads, the landing page is part of the result. A page that matches the ad, loads quickly on mobile and makes the next step obvious will usually convert better and cost less per lead. That's why we plan the website and the ads together rather than treating them as separate jobs. There's more on that on our Google Ads page.

Frequently asked questions

Is Webflow or Shopify better for SEO?

Neither has a decisive SEO advantage. Both support custom page titles, meta descriptions, redirects and sitemaps, and content quality, page speed and site structure matter more than the platform.

Which is easier for a business owner to update?

Both can be updated without code. Webflow's editor suits changing pages and publishing blog posts, while Shopify's admin suits managing products, stock and orders.

Can I move from Webflow to Shopify later?

Yes, but the design and content need to be rebuilt on the new platform. Set up 301 redirects from old URLs during the move so you keep your existing search rankings.

Is Shopify only for large online stores?

No. Shopify works well for small stores with only a few products, and its plans and apps scale as the catalogue and order volume grow.

Does Leed Agency build on both Webflow and Shopify?

Yes. Leed Agency, a website design and Google Ads studio in Cronulla in Sydney's Sutherland Shire, is a Shopify Partner and also builds on Webflow, choosing the platform per client after a free consultation.
